cake smash faqs

At least 4 weeks before your child’s 1st , 2nd… birthday.  This gives us time to discuss a theme and/or colors for your child’s session.

This session takes approx 1 hour and 30 minute and is split in 3 parts (candid/family shots at the beginning, cake smash and bath). You are welcome to bring 1-2 outfit changes for part 1 and 2.  Props I have available: letter’s (“O” “N” “E) and selection of paper decorations in different colours, some garlands too. However if you would like to achieve a specific look or colour scheme, I would recommend bringing your own, as well as any balloons.

Anything you would like.  Some clients like to match the theme or colors of your session. You can bring couple of outfits to choose on the day.

Of course.  This will make your session unique to you and your family.  Please write any specifics in my pre-session form when you book in.

This may happen.  Some children love the cake smash and dig right in.  Others are hesitant.  For most babies it is very new texture and taste. I would recommend choosing a cake that has soft icing or light buttercream. A great idea is to bring few blueberries that we can place on the cake which most children would want to grab them out of the cake and eat it. Also, good idea is to give your child only light snack before session rather than full meal,

You most likely will.  You will have to show your child that they can eat the cake so you might have to take a bite yourself.  Yummy.  Also, your child may stand up and walk or crawl around, so you will have to keep putting your child back into the designated space.  It’s likely that you will get frosting on your clothes so don’t wear anything you do not want to get ruined.

I like to keep the maximum family members at this session to the immediate family members only.  Too many people trying to get your child to smile or talking to them will only be a distraction. If you preferred lifestyle session, which happens in your home, you can invite grandparents or more extended family however this is not a birthday party type of shoot.

Of course.  We can start with family and sibling pictures.  Then get into the messy fun.

  • For your baby it will be bath time after the messy fun. If you would like to include bubble bath, please bring your usual bath soap. This is lots of fun for them and sometimes the best part. Please don’t forget your towel and some baby wipes if needed, as well as clean clothes and spare nappy.

Your private online gallery will be available to view within 2 weeks of your session.

Newborn session faqs

It is recommended to book at least 3 to 4 months in advance of your due date.  If you have recently had your baby, don’t worry, you’re not too late! Please contact me as soon as possible and I can usually schedule you in.

Booking in advance means that I can plan my diary as I take on a limited number per month to ensure my clients have flexibility in dates and to minimize turnaround times for edited galleries.

For portrait session, I recommend babies to be between 5-14 days old to achieve sleepy images of your baby. At this age they are happier to be repositioned, swaddled and sleep most of the time.

Lifestyle session focuses more on natural and baby-led posing, there is no set time frame for these sessions. Most of the new babies are within the first 1-8 weeks after birth. Babies closer to the 2 week old will be more sleepy, while babies closer to the 5 week old are more awake for their sessions. No matter what age your baby is, we will capture some absolutely beautiful portraits of him or her! Your sessions can take place on weekday during school hours or Saturday which I like to prioritize with families with school age children, as these book up very quickly. Managing my diary in advance can ensure that my clients have flexibility in dates and also seamless turnaround times for edited galleries

I always leave certain days in the week free to accommodate changes in timing. Babies almost never come on their EDD.

I recommend keeping to earth tones and pale hues like linens, greys, creams, blush and blues. Remember to pick outfits that are comfortable  and easy – nothing too restricting or form fitting so we can capture some beautiful flow and movement.

I recommend to avoid vivid colours, check and tops with large patterns, logos and pictures.

The average turnaround time from session to online gallery is around 2-3 weeks.

Of course! In-home sessions are more relaxed and I love being able to create authentic images of baby in your home! We’ll most likely focus on areas of your home that have larger windows and soft, natural light.
