When Caroline reached out to me about a photoshoot for her new coaching business, she admitted something I hear all the time – having her photo taken was far from her favourite thing. But she also understood that to show up authentically when offering such a personal and compassionate service is necessary part in fostering connection with her clients.
As a photographer, I see personal brand photography more than just taking nice photos of you. It’s about understanding the vision – not just about what kind of photos you want but why.
For Caroline, a newly launched divorce coach, her work is deeply personal and emotional, so we knew from the start that her photos needed to reflect trust, empathy and professionalism. She described her work as “supportive, empowering and forward-focusing” and wanted her brand photography to communicate all of those things.
We also chatted through things she felt a little nervous about (like being in front of the camera) and so we decided to start our photoshoot outside to help her feel more at ease. Because one thing I believe is that branding photos should feel like you. And that includes how the session is run.
Caroline chose Metal at Chalkwell Park as her location. A beautiful space that aligned perfectly with her brand palette of muted, earthy tones and the surrounding park and gardens offering a sense of calm, connection to nature and openness.
We began our session with some candid headshots outside. Then, we moved indoors to capture more structured “working” shots. The directional light inside one of the rooms created an intimate feel that felt perfect to capture the kind of one-to-one presence Caroline brings to her client sessions.
We planned to include small details and props that hint at her personality and interests, each of them adding depth and authenticity to the final images.
Although Caroline works with clients mostly online, she brought in a model client to help demonstrate what a in person coaching session might look and feel like. This helped show potential clients exactly what to expect, not just what she looks like, but how she holds space for others.
Your brand is you. It’s about reflecting who you are in a way that supports your work. That’s why I take a collaborative approach (even though I prefer to use the word co-creation as it sums up the way I like to work so perfectly). One that reflects your values, your personality and the way you want to show up for your clients.
Your clients don’t just want to know what you do, they want to know who they’ll be working with and first impressions count. And whether it’s a full spread of images for your website or socials or just a few headshots that feel like you, this kind of personal, thoughtful photography builds trust before a word is spoken.
You might feel a little unsure about stepping in front of the camera (most people do!). My hope is that the energy we create together, in the lead-up to your session and during your photoshoot, leaves you feeling inspired and more connected to your business.
