Personal brand photoshoot with Claire Hankey artist in Leigh on Sea, Essex

Brand photoshoot

I might have mentioned before that drawing and painting was my thing when I was a kid and even now, as an adult, I find arts & crafts and DIY very satisfactory ‘me time’.

When an opportunity presented itself working with an abstract artist Claire Hankey on her personal brand images, I was beyond excited.

The focus of her brand photoshoot was of her working on some of her pieces organically, not making her environment the perfect blank canvas, but seeing it as a working studio with Claire’s art hanged on the walls. This element beautifully tied in the colour palette that she was after.

The images were mainly shot in Claire’s studio in Leigh on Sea. A nature is a huge inspiration in Claire’s work and also her tools in creating art and so we took advantage of her beautiful, rather secret garden to take some passing photos of her too.

Her gallery included Claire’s headshots, as well as detailed shots of her tools and hands, flatlays, in conversation as well as working shots. Claire wanted to get a picture with her lovely dog Vito too. As it turned out, Vito loved having pictures taken and was very much part of the whole photoshoot.

We’ve chosen a beautiful summer evening and the light was just perfect to create some abstract photography that complimented Claire’s abstract art.

Brand film

Edited to add:

Couple of months after our photoshoot, Claire asked me back to create a short brand film for her latest art collection called Equinox which was due to be exhibited in a beautiful gallery in Aldeburgh. This film beautifully articulates the inspiration and Claire’s connection to nature in her art.

We chose to shoot in the afternoon to possibly catch the sun shining through. We worked to her voiceover script but not too literally, just working through the motion and emotion we wanted to evoke. It wasn’t the plan to shoot the latter clips when the sun was setting behind the houses opposite. We didn’t even have back-up date and were so lucky to have the sun come out on the day. The change of light just added to the feeling and atmosphere in the studio – the perfect nod to the shift of seasons, Claire is mentioning. Perhaps something that wouldn’t be noticed but the light became more moody and added to the feeling of winter.

What Claire said about this experience:

“It was a wonderful experience to collaborate with Petra on a short film about my art practice. Petra spent time beforehand discussing what I needed and made some fantastic suggestions. I also shared my own ideas about how I wanted the film to look and feel. The actual filming was so much fun and she put me completely at ease from the start. I was delighted with the final film- it’s just a couple of minutes long and just what I wanted to give people a brief insight into my art practice. Petra shared all the clips with me and I use them frequently for Instagram reels and email content. I can’t recommend Petra highly enough!”
